Adult MMA Classes in Lewis Center

Adult Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) – Mixed Marital Arts, or MMA, comes from the fighting style of “vale tudo” which in its native Brazilian means “no rules.” This sport combines more common combative styles such as Muay Thai, Greco-Roman and Free-style Wrestling, Pankration, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Boxing, Judo, Karate and even Taekwondo, to dominate or submit your opponent both on the ground and standing. This sport is most commonly known as the premise for the promotion, Ultimate Fighting Championships, or the UFC, which rules the sports networks and has a rapidly growing fan base.

Our MMA team – Topp Dogg MMA is headed by professional fighter and Carlson Gracie Jr. brown belt, Rocky “the number” Edwards. Fighters train to compete in the cage, on the mat and in the ring. Learn technique, build strength and endurance, learn to hold your own in sparring and develop the patience and hardiness to become an athlete in one of the toughest sports in the world!

Brazilian Ju-jitsu (BJJ) – Brazilian Ju-jitsu, or BJJ, is often referred to as “the gentle art” for its focus on bringing small or weaker opponents the advantage. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo, a form of Japanese ground fighting, and those fundamentals were taught to Carlos Gracie and Luiz França by Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Carlos Gracie and subsequently his brothers Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., Jorge and Helio Gracie are considered to be the founders of the modern day BJJ.

There are no strikes in this martial art and instead, the focus is given to combat on the ground in a series of “submissions” and defenses. Each “submission” is a pressure point, joint lock or choke that forces the opponent (if adhered correctly) to surrender. It is an extremely effective martial art for self-defense, and uses strength building isometric movements. Tournaments and practice are held in gi (traditional kimono and belt) and in no gi (in regular workout attire). All levels and all ages are welcome on the mat to practice this amazing sport!
